It helps ensure capture of subtle gradations in deeply shadowed areas of a scene, while at the upper end the curve extends beyond the 1600% limit of the image sensor to support image manipulation in the grading process (sensitizing margin) – allowing gradations at that upper end to be made brighter if desired .
