It was Canon’s goal to develop a lens that would ensure constant subjective sharpness within that Middle Zone to the degree possible and to further protect that sharpness over the entire focal range of the lens. This was deemed important to achieve the performance expected of a variable prime lens.

Canon’s optical design teams spent a considerable time using powerful computer aided simulation tools to explore the possibilities in reconciling very high 4K specifications with a variety of novel design strategies that would collectively contribute to a unique Canon Personality in the new cine zoom lenses. That extensive exploration examined all aspects of lens image quality parameters and image aberrations and distortions in a prolonged search for an aggregate performance that would speak to the urgings of those with whom we had consulted.

Upon confronting the term Modulation Transfer Function, the question immediately arises as to what is being modulated, what is being transferred, and how does all of this bear upon resolution? It will be shown that these terms help us provide a linkage between the resolution capability of an imaging component and the contribution that component makes to the perceived sharpness seen when we look at the final reproduced image.
